GENERAL QUESTIONS:

  • How much does a yard of your product cover?
A yard here at The Green Connection is a cubic yard. One cubic yard covers a 10' x 10' area at a 3" depth. We have added a conversion calculator to our website to help you determine how much product you need.  Of course, we are here to help you by telephone, too!

  • What does 1/2 inch screened mean?

The Green Connection, Inc. uses a piece of equipment called a screener to recycle organic materials. The screener has 1/2 inch square holes (like a big window screen) which raw materials, the green waste, pass through onto a conveyor.

  • If weeds are brought to your site for recycling, how do you know the final product will not contaminate my lawn and gardens and I will have weeds spreading like wildfire?
During the process of recycling the green waste, the temperatures of the mulch & compost piles reach temperatures of 125 degrees. The high temperatures kill any trace weed seeds.

  • How can your product be organic when chemically treated lawn clippings are brought to your facility?

A very common question, thank you! The recycling process consists of grinding, screening, and composting in which both the manufacturing process and the natural process of micro organisms eating away and/or eroding any possible chemically treated green waste. The value added products we create are free of any chemicals, thus all natural - organic.

MULCH

  • What is your organic dark mulch made out of?
The organic dark mulch is made out of organic waste brought to our composting facility by local contractors and landscapers on the South Shore. Leaves and grass are later mixed with the other organic waste. The recycling process takes several months and requires many hours of labor and the right equipment. The end product: a value added product which remains our number one seller!
  • How come your "Pat Black" is pricier than your organic dark mulch?
"Pat Black" Mulch is processed green waste that is then color enhanced with a dye. The dye is expensive and the process is more labor intensive.
  • So, what actually is in your red cedar mulch?
Our red cedar mulch is a value added product consisting of a blend of native red cedar, Christmas trees and soft and hard woods then color enhanced with dye.

  • Do you make the hemlock blend, too?
The Green Connection imports the hemlock blend from up North! Due to the limited supply of Hemlock bark, the mulch is a blend of hemlock bark, spruce and pine - then colored!

  • How come there are weeds in my mulch?
As with all lawns and gardens, maintenance is required! Mother Nature carries weed seed into ground cover. We recommend regular weeding and after spreading our mulch, treat the mulch with an organic weed killer. Visit
The Go Green Web Directory for products.

  • Which mulch keeps the weeds down best?
No mulch keeps weeds down better than another. All beds require regular maintenance. You can try putting the mulch down thicker and/or trying an organic weed killer: visit our website for
    links to green resources.
  • How many yards of mulch can your smallest truck carry?
Our small dump trucks can hold up to (5) five yards of mulches and compost OR (4) four yards of dry loam and veggie blend safely.
  • How big is the 3 yard mulch pile when dumped in my driveway?
The size of the mulch pile, when dropped in your driveway, will be equivalent to the size of an average refrigerator.

COMPOST
What is your compost made of?

Our compost is made of recycled leaves - from your backyards!

FIREWOOD

  • What is a cord of wood?
A CORD of wood is actually a 4 x 4 x 8 stack of wood when at log length, before cut and split which is 128 cubic feet. The Green Connection, Inc. delivers a cord of wood which is a 4 x 4 x 8 pile of wood already cut and split which is approximately 183 cubic feet, loose.
